Why Daufuskie Island Is a Great Couples’ Escape
Looking for a romantic getaway that feels like you’ve stepped into another world? (Minus the hefty price tag of international travel?)
Daufuskie Island might be your answer.
This hidden gem sits nestled between Hilton Head Island and Savannah, Georgia – but with zero cars, zero traffic lights, and zero strip malls – it might as well be on another planet compared to your busy everyday life.
The best part? It’s only accessible by boat, which means you’re literally leaving the mainland (and all your stress) behind.
I recently spent a weekend there with my wife and discovered why this secluded barrier island has become such a perfect couples’ destination. Let me break it down for you…
Why Daufuskie Is a Couple’s Paradise
Remember that feeling when you were dating and time seemed to slow down when you were together? That’s the vibe of this entire island.
Daufuskie has a magical way of forcing you to disconnect from the digital world and reconnect with each other. With Spanish moss dripping from ancient oak trees, pristine beaches that aren’t packed with tourists, and sunsets that look Photoshopped (but aren’t) – the romance factor is off the charts.
The locals joke that “Daufuskie time” is a real phenomenon, where minutes stretch into hours and you find yourself actually having conversations again instead of scrolling through Instagram side by side. Novel concept, right?
And while you can certainly find luxury accommodations, the island’s charm isn’t about fancy resorts – it’s about the authentic experience of stepping back in time together.
Getting to Your Island Escape

First things first – you can’t drive here. And that’s part of the magic.
You’ll need to take a ferry from Hilton Head or Savannah, which isn’t just transportation – it’s the first part of your adventure. As someone who gets seasick watching water scenes in movies, trust me when I say it’s a smooth, enjoyable ride with stunning views of the Lowcountry.
Pro tip: Time your arrival for late afternoon if possible. The light hitting the marshes as you approach the island is nothing short of spectacular, and you’ll immediately start taking photos that make your friends jealous. #NoFilter needed.
Romantic Activities That Don’t Feel Forced
Beach Walks Without the Crowds
Forget those romantic comedy scenes where couples stroll down beaches filled with other people – Daufuskie’s beaches are practically deserted most of the time.
Bloody Point Beach (don’t let the name scare you – it’s gorgeous) stretches for three miles with soft sand and gentle waves. You can walk hand-in-hand, collect shells, or just sit and watch dolphins playing offshore.
We spent a whole morning just sitting on the beach, talking and watching the shorebirds. In our normal lives, when was the last time we did that? The lack of distractions is the ultimate luxury here.
Explore the Island Together
Once you’re on the island, you have two main options for getting around: bikes or golf carts.
We rented a golf cart, which quickly became one of my favorite parts of the trip. There’s something about cruising down oak-canopied lanes at 15mph with the person you love that feels both adventurous and intimate at the same time.
The entire island is only about 8 square miles, making it perfect for exploration. You’ll find yourselves stopping constantly to take photos, check out historic sites, or just marvel at how nature and history blend seamlessly together.
Food With a View
Let’s be honest – a good meal with an amazing view is central to any romantic getaway.
The Old Daufuskie Crab Company sits right on the water and serves up the freshest seafood you can imagine. Their Deviled Crab™ is famous for good reason, and eating on their patio as the sun sets over the tidal river might be one of the most romantic dining experiences we’ve had.
For lunch, Lucy Bell’s Food & Wine serves incredible southern cuisine in a charming cottage setting. Their shrimp and grits are next-level delicious, and the intimate setting makes for great conversation.
Wine and Spirits Tasting
If you enjoy adult beverages, you’re in luck. The Silver Dew Winery (South Carolina’s oldest!) offers tastings of their unique Scuppernong wine.
But my personal favorite was the Daufuskie Island Distillery, where they make small-batch spirits including rum and Blueberry Lavender vodka. The tasting experience is informal and fun, and you might find yourselves with a new favorite cocktail to recreate at home as a reminder of your trip.
Creating Those “Remember When” Moments

The best romantic getaways give you stories you’ll tell for years. Here are some experiences that delivered that for us:
Sunset Watching (It’s Better Than Netflix)
I know watching the sunset sounds cliché, but on Daufuskie, it’s an event. Find a spot on the western side of the island around dusk and prepare to have your mind blown.
The colors reflecting off the marshes and water create a 360-degree light show that makes you feel like you’re inside a painting. We sat in silence for almost the entire sunset, occasionally looking at each other with that “Are you seeing this?” expression.
Kayaking Through Marshes
For the more adventurous couples, renting kayaks and paddling through the island’s waterways is an unforgettable experience.
There’s something about navigating through the tall marsh grasses, spotting herons and maybe even an alligator or two (from a safe distance!), that creates a shared experience of discovery. The guided eco-tours are especially good if you want to learn about the ecosystem while you paddle.
Horseback Riding on the Beach
Talk about a bucket list item! Riding Marsh Tacky horses (a breed native to the area) along the shoreline is the definition of romantic. The guides are knowledgeable and make sure even beginners feel comfortable.
My wife had never been on a horse before and was nervous, but by the end, she was beaming. Sometimes the best romantic memories come from stepping slightly outside your comfort zone together.
Tips for Maximum Romance

Pack Light (But Don’t Forget These Essentials)
The island is casual – leave the fancy clothes at home unless you’re planning a special dinner. But do bring:
- A good camera (your phone works too, but the photo ops are incredible)
- Bug spray (those romantic evening walks can include mosquitoes)
- A light jacket (evening breezes can get cool, perfect for snuggling)
- Wine or champagne if you’re staying in a rental (stock up before you come)
Unplug Completely
I cannot stress this enough – the magic of Daufuskie happens when you put the phones away. We made a pact to check them only once a day, and it completely transformed our experience.
Plan One Special Surprise
Whether it’s arranging a private picnic, scheduling a massage, or just bringing along a small meaningful gift to give your partner on the beach – having one special moment planned adds an extra layer of romance to the trip.
Be Flexible With “Island Time”
Things move slower here, and that’s the point. Embrace it rather than fighting it. That ferry might be 15 minutes late. Your food might take a little longer. The golf cart rental might not be exactly on schedule.
The couples who enjoy Daufuskie the most are the ones who see these “delays” as part of the charm rather than inconveniences. It’s all part of the experience of stepping outside normal life.
The Real Magic of Daufuskie

After spending time on the island, I realized something important: Daufuskie isn’t just a romantic destination because of its beautiful scenery or activities.
It’s romantic because it creates the space for you to actually be present with each other. In our hyper-connected, over-scheduled lives, that’s increasingly rare and valuable.
The island almost forces you to slow down, look each other in the eye, have real conversations, and share new experiences together. And isn’t that what romance is actually about?
So if your relationship could use a reset, or you just want to create some beautiful memories together away from the noise of everyday life, consider Daufuskie Island for your next getaway. The ferry ride back to the mainland might be the only thing you don’t love about the trip.
